VSAT technology is in fact the only useful (and affordable) form of communication once a ship is away from the coast and the mobile phone network.
There are a number of frequency bands in use today, such as the reliable Ku-band, the more recently developed Ka-band, the C-band and the X-band just to name a few. All these GEO satellites are orbiting at around 35,800 km away from us.
This last band has the property that the signal is not hindered by bad weather conditions, but the bandwidth is limited; this property makes the X-band reserved for military use.
Compared to the Ku- and Ka-bands, the C-band has a very large working area, up to the polar regions; however, the necessary antennas for this are a lot larger than with the Ku- and Ka-bands.
The modern and fast Ka-band is broadcast via only a few satellites, each serving a limited part of the earth. It is therefore not the case that this fast connection can be used worldwide, so we still need the well-known Ku-band for worldwide coverage.
Because there are relatively few satellites with Ka-band signal, the price is also higher. However, the performance of the Ka-band is also higher; so if this is important to you then this might be a wise choice
We can deliver through our worldwide Ku-band 55 Mbps download capacity to your ship on one antenna. However, this is more than sufficient for the vast majority of ships.
We currently offer connections for VSAT on the Ku, Ka and C bands. And it won’t surprise you: Also all antennas for these bands. Including a combined Ku+Ka system.
As technicians, we therefore still recommend the use of the Ku-band for the coming years, also with a view to the future developments of LEO and MEO satellites. Anyway, the antennas that we currently sell are often already suitable for the use of satellites that use LEO and MEO technology.
